Kunstfyrværkeriets historie i Norden |
| art nr B-D02 |
Lars Hoffmann Barfod, Ole Svensson og Michhael Varming |
|
250:- |
 |

Hudson Maxim |

This entertaining book doesnÂ’t tell you how to make fireworks or explosives or anything else that goes BOOM. But it does give you pyro reading that will put a smile on your face, and give you great insight into the high energy situation around the turn of the century. Think of it: Black powder was seriously being replaced by nitro and smokeless powders, and here are the people who are living and coping with the transition. The book is actually a series of monographs written by Hudson Maxim and updated around 1916. Maxim and his brother were classic 19th century entrepreneurs and inventors (including the Maxim machine gun). The world was exploding with great building projects, from dams to world class harbors, and explosives of all kinds were in great demand. But what was the pool of knowledge then? How much experience was there in manufacturing nitro, in transporting it, in using it? What other great explosives were waiting to be discovered? Well, Hudson Maxim was on the cutting edge of these discoveries, and these stories tell the tale. Most of the experimentation was not done in gigantic corporate laboratories, with staff and support and government regulation. Most of these great inventions came out of single investigators working in small quarters, with limited tools and equipment and no support staff. MaximÂ’s work, as he graciously explains in detail, was done in his (then) very rural situation in Lake Hopatcong, NJ. (What happens when he suffers a horrific accident in this rural setting, with no medical help within miles?) Dynamite Stories is a full size reproduction of the original. The 80 stories are supplemented with 13 different articles on nitroglycerin for an interesting conclusion. 125 pages.

The stage and special effects industry as a whole has been lacking a good, well written, reference book that is actually of use to the technician (there are plenty of titles aimed at the general public, but too few aimed at the practising technician). Although “Britain and America are two countries kept apart by a common language”, I have to say that I am rather impressed. The book is well laid out with chapters devoted to ‘Professionalism, Responsibility & Licensing’, ‘General Application Information’ (including security, permits, local inspectors and of course safety). I rarely have a good thing to say about the state of UK explosives law, but having read these chapters, I now realise that the problems I face are nothing in comparison to those tackled regularly by US technicians.

A novelist and popular history writer, Kelly traces the history of gunpowder from 10th-century China to the late 19th century, when it was supplanted by Alfred Nobel’s nitroglycerin. Kelly takes advantage of gunpowder’s role in the histories of armaments and war to titillate with gruesome but fascinating accounts of the atrocities the destructive power of gunpowder visited on Europe: in the 30 Years War, the German states lost an estimated eight million people—one-third of their population. As opposed to the shocking immediacy with which the atomic bomb entered collective consciousness, gunpowder and its accompanying technology developed as effective instruments of war over hundreds of years. But of the two, Kelly says, gunpowder has had a greater impact on the course of civilization. For example, he argues plausibly that, by the 16th century, the cost of gunpowder needed by an effective fighting force "favored strong centralized states" with the authority and ability to tax and in turn created "the foundations of modern nations." This miscellany jumps between the technical developments that continually improved gunpowder (readers will know more than they ever felt necessary about the creation of saltpeter), and gunpowder’s cultural impact. Kelly’s erudition ranges from the development of the science of ballistics to the infamous 1605 Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot to blow up the English parliament. Kelly (Line of Sight, etc.) writes well and has a terrific eye for the instructive detail or odd historical fact that brings the narrative to life. It is an entertaining and readable effort. 36 b&w illus.

Ian von Maltitz |

Making Black Powder has always been completely dependent on the skill of the maker. Consider the requirements: Obtaining and purifying the ingredients; reducing to proper particle size and then incorporating them into a mix; milling the mix for the required time and – most crucial – determining how much water to add and when to add it. Then, further processing the milled “green powder”, a highly dangerous situation.
Finally, producing the grain sizes needed for the various uses. While all these steps are important, the early ones – ingredient selection and preparation and initial milling of the mix, are so critical to the end result.
And there is where this new book shines!
The author examines potassium nitrate and sulfur, offering just the depth of understanding the reader needs. Now the author gets serious, because he has determined that one of the biggest secrets in successful Black Powder making is using the proper charcoal! He devotes two full chapters to this magic ingredient, examining many different sources and types. ItÂ’s what the reader needs to know about charcoal to make his own important decisions.
By Chapter 3 the reader is on his way to learning the simplest method of making Black Powder. Then the text picks up speed with chapters on better techniques, CIA powder and its variations, various milling methods, and then the best methods to produce Black Powder suitable for specific needs. ThereÂ’s even a chapter on making it with cheaper ingredients and techniques.
Final chapters are for the serious investigator because they cover the chemistry of Black Powder, alternate methods and materials, the rationale of testing and test procedures. Three appendices add a first person view of the last remaining North American Black Powder operation, and tables that offer practical use.
